Whilst soft drinks have been available in ring-pull cans for nearly half a century, baked beans and other tinned foodstuffs have only recently become as easy to get at as their fizzy counterparts. Still, even tins that required tin openers were an improvement of the first heavy-weight containers that could only be opened with knives, chisels, rocks – and brute force.
